The Woodlands Unveils Refurbished Waterway Cruisers

The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau has unveiled two of the Waterway Cruisers that have undergone a refurbishment.

“The Puffy,” named after The Woodlands pinecone-themed mascot, and “The Dreamer,” named after the well-known sculpture at Woodlands Parkway and East Panther Creek, are the first of six cruisers to make their return after about a six-month restoration project at Professional Yacht Management in Kemah.

The two boats were put on display during a ceremony Nov. 10 at an event hosted by Landry's Restaurant. Landry's now offers seated dinners for groups up to 20 and appetizers and cocktails for up to 35 aboard “The Dreamer.” The concept of offering meals aboard the cruisers was conceived in order to bring more attention, and riders, to the Waterway Cruisers.

“Even though the cruisers are highly visible, virtually no marketing attention has been placed on the boats. Our goal at the CVB team is to energize and revitalize them as a destination point for riders to enjoy,” CVB president Nick Wolda, , said.

According to the CVB, events such as company retreats, birthday parties, prom dinners, baby showers and family gatherings may now be catered aboard some of the refurbished cruisers.

“The Puffy” and “The Dreamer” were restored at a cost of about $41,000. The project was paid for by the CVB, which is funded through hotel occupancy taxes. In addition to the new dining concept aboard “The Dreamer,” the cruisers' interiors and exteriors have been completely refurbished.

The Waterway Cruisers operate on The Woodlands Waterway Monday – Thursday, 11 a.m.—7 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.—9 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.—10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.—8 p.m. A general public day pass with unlimited rides on the Waterway Cruisers is $5. Youth, seniors and the disabled are $2.50. Tickets can be purchased on board each Waterway Cruiser.

The League of American Bicyclists recently recognized The Woodlands Township with the designation of Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC), an award presented to communities with remarkable commitments to bicycling.

The Township, along with 10 other communities nationwide, was awarded the Bronze level designation as a first-time BFC. Communities may renew their designations every four years, with the opportunity to be re-evaluated and move up to higher designations.

“We are proud and honored to receive this important award,” said Township Director of Parks and Recreation Chris Nunes. “This award is a result of systematic planning and the development of programs that recognizes the importance of the bicycle to The Woodlands quality of life.”

Market Street Announces Tree Lighter

Eight-year-old Kole Smithson of The Woodlands has been named as this year's official tree lighter of Market Street’s 70-foot Christmas tree. The annual Market Street Tree Lighting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, and will include holiday musical performances, magic elves and carriage rides.

Kole, a second grader at Deretchin Elementary, moved to The Woodlands with his family four years ago. He has been treated for ADHD and a Sensory Integration Disorder through Texas Children’s Hospital and has been able to overcome many obstacles through therapy and medication.

Kole, who enjoys baseball and reading about ocean animals, was nominated by his grandmother Carol Pierce. In her letter, Carol writes, “Kole is a big kid with a big heart.”
